The book publishing process can seem long and mysterious when you’re just starting the journey of taking your research from concept to publication or if you’re more familiar with publishing research articles rather than books.

James Hu, a Clinical Editor from Springer China, saw the need to breakdown the book publication process with a clear visual that can easily be referenced when the question of, “what now?” comes up.

This infographic provides a general overview of the process. Our editors can always provide more detailed information in relation to where you are in the publication process.

To start, ask yourself how much time you spend each day reading literature, regardless of where and the choice of device – whether it’s in your lab on a desktop, waiting in line somewhere with a smartphone or on a tablet at home in bed. Whatever number of hours you estimate, one thing is probably certain: you never have too much time to read.

That’s why, as lecturer Dr. Jeffery Robens will explain in the short video below, efficiency is key. He explains how one can become a more efficient reader through the following strategies:

  • Reading often—the key to keeping up-to-date and finding new ideas in your research field
  • Finding articles in the right places, e.g. databases, review articles and journal websites
  • Identifying a good journal, which helps save you time determining the quality of an article
  • Enhancing efficiency: avoid reading from start to finish, especially scientific articles. Instead, follow certain steps:
    • Read based on what you are looking for and familiarize yourself with key words to help you identify where key information is located
    • Use reference management software to manage and organize your increasing literature.
